Christmas Night Shootout

Location: 298 Cedar Avenue, South Pittsburg, (Marion County), Tennessee.

The Tennessee Historic Commission marker seen here, sponsored by the South Pittsburg Historic Preservation Society, Inc., in remembrance of the infamous Christmas Night Shootout in 1927 was officially dedicated at 2:00 P.M. CDT on Sunday, July 20, 2014 in the Senior Center on Elm Avenue. The marker was placed near the location of the shootout on Cedar Avenue where it intersects Third Street.

This Tennessee historic marker in honor of the life of James Thomas Fitz-Gerald, Jr. was officially dedicated at 2:00 P.M. CST on Sunday, October 29, 2006 in front of the American Legion Hall located at the corner of Elm Avenue and Third Street.
Jobyna Ralston’s Birthplace

Location: 324 S. Cedar Avenue in downtown South Pittsburg, Tennessee in front of Chester Powell Senior Apartments.

Marion County & Grundy County

Location: U.S. Highway 41 at Monteagle, Tennessee where it intersects Main Street just at top of the mountain.

This is near the Marion and Grundy county line with marker just inside Grundy County. This is a two sided marker with one side for Marion County, Tennessee and the other for Grundy County.

Location: At the intersection of Elm Avenue and 3rd Street, on the right when traveling south on Elm Avenue. Marker is at or near this postal address: 300 Elm Ave, South Pittsburg TN.
McReynolds High School

Location: Marker is in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, in Marion County. It is on North Cedar Avenue (Tennessee Route 27) south of Old Jasper Road, on the right when traveling south.
Nickajack Cave

Location: (Missing) I-24 Rest Area for east-bound lanes just before crossing the Tennessee River/Nickajack Lake bridge on your way to Chattanooga.
Peter Turney’s Birthplace

Location: U.S. Highway 41/72/64 west-bound side beside the Marion County Justice Center in Jasper, Tennessee.
Running Water Creek Bridge

Location: Along highway 134, located on the right just before the current railroad bridge. Original location and bridge abutments are about one mile farther up the road on left just past a large standing concrete tile.

This marker was installed in 2008 near the present-day railroad bridge. The original location of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad bridge told about by the sign was about a mile farther up the valley road towards Chattanooga. Some piers for the old bridge can be seen to the left at the original location. The bridge in background of photo below was completed around 1912.
