Ayers Cemetery

Ayers/Cross/Thomas Cemetery, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

The Ayers/Cross/Thomas Cemetery is pictured here on October 26, 2005. This cemetery is located in a pasture about five miles up Sweeden’s Cove Road near South Pittsburg, Tennessee. It is on a hill behind the Church of Christ. The property belongs to Don Ament who is kin to the Ayers family that are buried in the cemetery. The cemetery has about one hundred graves in it of which less than thirty are identified. Many stones are down and fences damaged.

Many grave markers in the Ayers/Cross/Thomas Cemetery have crude inscriptions on rough stone. This one has “H.OOT” inscribed.

Mary J. Blizzard gravestone, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

In the three pictures here can be seen the grave of Mary J. Blizzard who died Christmas 1884. Surrounding this grave was a unique cedar fence that was erected shortly after her death. Surprisingly, that fence survived nearly 120-years complete only to be severely damaged by a storm a few years back. Despite this, the wood parts are still in excellent condition for their age.

There were at least three graves in the Ayers / Cross / Thomas Cemetery that were fenced. All, including the cedar fence, have been severely damaged. Pictured above is a front and back view of the best preserved fenced grave.

This vintage wroth iron fence that once surrounded a grave has been flattened either by fallen trees or cattle.

Loretta Hise gravestone, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

Like the fences surrounding some of the graves, few gravestones in the cemetery have escaped damage.  The gravestone here is for Loretta Hise.

Sinthe Recter gravestone, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

This overturned grave marker is for Sinthe Hauner Recter who died in 1901. Since a few Havner family members are buried nearby, it seems likely that instead of “Hauner” it should be “Havner”.

William G. Smith gravestone, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

Here is the gravestone for William G. Smith who was the son of T.J. & R.A. Smith. Smith was only 10 months old when he died on July 21, 1891.

The gravestone seen here is for Mary E. Havner. This nineteen-month-old was born in Marion County, Tennessee on May 7, 1866 and died December 15, 1867. She was the daughter of R. & M.E. Havner. One thing to note is that the child died on the exact same day as her mother who is buried nearby. No records are known to exist that would reveal why both mother and child died the same day. Could it have been a fire, maybe? We may never know.

City Cemetery

Old City Cemetery, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

The City Cemetery in South Pittsburg, Tennessee is one of the community’s oldest graveyards and is the final resting place for many of the area’s early settlers in addition to many of the city’s founding fathers. The cemetery, which dates back to at least 1840, is located below Whiteacre Point on the south side of South Pittsburg Mountain. The old McReynold’s High School gymnasium is located directly in front of the old cemetery.

History and continued work

The cemetery has a unique history when compared to most of the South’s older cemeteries. With the interment of numerous African-Americans, these burial grounds were not subdivided to distinguish between the races. Nor was it separated to distinguish between the rich and poor nor between those of differing religious beliefs or nationalities. The cemetery also contains the graves of some veterans from both the Union and Confederate armies, which had taken up arms against each other during the American Civil War.

As with all cemeteries not under perpetual care the passage of time and neglect by the living gives Mother Nature the opportunity to reclaim the hallowed ground and the City Cemetery has not been immune from such encroachment. With its somewhat isolated location, the cemetery, which has an estimated 1600 burials, has been overtaken on many occasions by trees, overgrowth, weeds and numerous briars, which form for a nearly impenetrable fortress against those wishing to visit the cemetery. On numerous occasions throughout the history of the cemetery, citizens have organized and mounted valiant efforts to reclaim the cemetery so that the families of those buried there may visit the graves of their loved-ones without having to carve a trail through a jungle and the risk of being snake bitten.

All these efforts were successful in their own way, but the failure to continue the maintenance each year allowed Mother Nature to once again reclaim the land. This has been the case in every attempt to date including the 1999 cleanup, which was funded by the City of South Pittsburg after it acquired ownership of the 20 plus acres of property that same year.

This cemetery restoration effort was headed by Ray Evans, who was contracted to do this work by the city. A lot of expense and effort was put into this cleanup including the mapping of most of the cemetery and its burials. However, no additional work was done on the cemetery afterwards with the exception of regular maintenance of some family plots by relatives, which was made more difficult to those doing this work once the remainder of the cemetery was again allowed to become overgrown with weeds, bushes and briars.

With the last known burial in the cemetery being in 1975, even these few efforts by relatives of some of the deceased are beginning to dwindle as relatives of those who make up part the more recent burials are reaching ages where this work is becoming harder and harder with each passing year. As more and more time elapses age will eventually render these individuals unable to do this maintenance.

In 2004, the South Pittsburg Historic Preservation Society, Inc. took up the challenge of reclaiming the old cemetery after fellow member, Susan Mack, urged the Society to take on the project. She was named administrator of the project by the Society and she promptly began to formulate a plan to cleanup the cemetery. Since that time volunteers have cleared about one-third of the cemetery of its fallen trees and overgrowth with planned dates for continuing the work until all of the cemetery has been cleared.

In late summer 2005, the Society separated from the project and allowed the City of South Pittsburg, who owns the cemetery grounds, to take charge. An independent board of volunteers now works with the city and under the leadership Mrs. Mack towards achieving the goal of reclaiming the cemetery.

Many families with relatives buried in the cemetery have made contributions of cash and materials for this work along with some local retail establishments and groups having also contributed. In addition, fund raisers are also planned in an effort to raise additional funds for this continued work, which includes resetting many large tombstones that have been unseated from their bases by sinking graves and fallen trees. This is not to mention the several sections of vintage wrought-iron fences that have become warped and twisted after fallen trees landed across them.

For this work to be continued until finished and maintained each year following more contributions are needed. If you or your group would like to contribute to this effort by donating funds or volunteering your time to reclaiming and restoring the old City Cemetery at South Pittsburg, Tennessee, please contact the Society at: SPHPSinc@gmail.com or to learn more about donating, click here.

Jane and John Haley graves, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

Pictured here on March 6, 2005 are the two oldest known graves in the old City Cemetery at South Pittsburg, Tennessee. These two graves are covered with hand-hewn limestone block burial vaults that have sandstone headstones that stand nearly six feet tall. The grave on the left is for Eliza Jane Haley who departed this life on October 10, 1840 at the age of 51 years. The grave on the right is for John C. Haley who was born February 7, 1777 and died September 3rd, 1840. Other members of the Haley family are buried nearby.

Bowron family gravestone, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

In a section of the cemetery near the lower end a large common stone denotes the graves of several members of the Bowron family. James Bowron, who died in 1877, was the person responsible for the establishment of South Pittsburg after he chose this fertile river valley land in 1875 for the establishment of a city that would be the commercial hub of an English based iron trade industry. Bowron, after arriving in the United States in 1873, spent two years searching land all across the country that contained, iron and coal along with red and brown ores, which were all within a close proximity of one another. After purchasing land options in Virginia and Georgia that failed to meet the needs of the English Syndicate, Bowron investigated Marion County, Tennessee where everything they needed for successful iron production were found. The towns of Whitwell and Victoria also in Marion County were founded at the same time as South Pittsburg as a result of Bowron’s land purchases for the London based company.

Mary and Joe Barnett gravestone, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

Pictured here is the tombstone for Mary J. (1867 – 193?) and Joe H. Barnett (1867 – 1945). Note the large ground hugging vines that have grown over the grave marker. These large stiff vines prevented the photographer from viewing the last numeral in the death date of Mary J. These graves along with numerous others were discovered on March 5, 2005 in a previously unknown section of the cemetery that contains several unlisted graves as well as unmarked. This section along with one other did not make it onto the map produced by Ray Evans in 1999.

Above are two other grave markers in the previously unknown section of the City Cemetery. The marker on the left was set back up by the photographer to reveal the name of Joe Osborne who was born in May 1885 and died June 22, 1928. The stone of the right simply reads “WILKERSON K of P” It is assumed the the “K of P” stands for the fraternal order known as the Knights of Pythias. These photographs were taken on March 6, 2005.

The Bean-Roulston (Beene-Raulston) Cemetery historic marker is pictured here at the entrance to Sweeden’s Cove Road on U.S. Highway 72 near South Pittsburg, Tennessee. The cemetery is located on the right exactly seven miles down Sweeden’s Cove Road. It is on a slight hill another one-fifth of a mile up a small road leading off the main road and is surrounded by a rock wall. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Marion County.

Gunter Cemetery

Gunter Cemetery, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

The Gunter Cemetery, pictured above on October 23, 2005, is located near the Chapel on the Hill (old Primitive Baptist Church) near the intersection of Elm Avenue and Eighth Street in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. The graveyard, which contains at least 1008 graves, of which only one in ten are marked, is named after John Gunter, who owned a pre-Civil War home near this location. Mr. Gunter along with several members of his family are buried here.

This section of the land running parallel with Elm Avenue just outside the old concrete posts, which designate the Gunter Cemetery’s boundaries, contains several unmarked graves that are evident by depressions in the soil. Bodies within many of these were removed to the Burl Lee Annex in the 1930s after construction on the street forced their removal. It is unknown how many graves are still located outside the boundaries.

The Gunter family members are buried within the limestone walls pictured here. John Gunter, Lavina Gunter, Louisa Gunter, T. C. Hill and two Gunter infants are buried here. These were the first burials on the grounds.

Three large oak trees of nearly the same age, size and spacing apart stand near the Gunter family plots and limestone walls, which can be seen in the far background.  These trees look to have been planted more than a century before as either property boundary markers or for lining the road leading to the Gunter Plantation.

The Gunter family buried within these limestone walls shared a single partically damaged obelisk stone. Peter Palk’s stone was found underneath this marker when cut-up in September 2007.

On the Ninth Street side of the Gunter family marker was the inscription for the two Gunter infants. There were no other inscriptions on this side of the stone. The Cedar Avenue side was not inscribed.

There are four walled in sections of the Gunter Cemetery, which are pictured here. Only the Gunter section has all of its graves marked.

Time has taken a toll on this once covered infant’s grave. Many tombstones and walls within the graveyard are damaged in a similar fashion or now missing all together. This grave belongs to Willie Parton, who died in 1881 and was the infant son of J.R. & Anne Parton.

Near Elm Avenue is this Civil War veterans’ stone for Clark Ellis, who was a Union Cavalryman during the war.

The recently discovered Peter Palk gravestone is pictured before being set over an unused plot near the recently restored Gunter plots enclosure by Dennis Lambert on October 13, 2007 as seen in picture above.

Palk, Peter – Born Dec. 21, 1824 – Died Mar 21, 1883 – “Our Father”
Note: The Peter Palk grave marker was found in late September 2007 underneath the Gunter obelisk stone during restoration work on Gunter plots stone enclosure. The Palk marker was some years before apparently taken from the cemetery and used to shim the Gunter stone to level. Since there has been work many times done on the cemetery over the last century, it is not likely that information will be found as to who or when the Palk stone was misused. It is also unlikely that we will learn of where in the cemetery it should be placed since there are hundreds of unmarked graves. As a result, Dennis Lambert set the Palk stone on October 13, 2007 over an unused plot near the Gunter stone enclosure. Maybe someday it can actually be placed over Mr. Palk’s grave if information or evidence is found to pinpoint the location.

Wynne Cemetery

Possibly the grave of William M. King, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

The limestone covered grave with the tree growing from it is believed to be that of William M. King for whom King’s Cove was named. This may well be the oldest grave located in the Wynne Cemetery.

The limestone covered grave in the center of the above picture is that of John Wynne who was born in 1800 and died in 1864. The vault has collapsed and the cover stone has broken. In the right picture can be seen the faint inscription on part of the cover stone.

Grave of L.G. Wynne and his wife or Little Berry Wynne and one of his wives, courtesy of Dennis Lambert

Two limestone vault covered graves are pictured above on November 26, 2005. The graves are likely those of L.G. Wynne and his wife or Little Berry Wynne and one of his wives. Note: In the second picture the marker on top of one of the vaults has been broken and from the weathered wear to the break area it appears to have occurred many years ago. The marker for the other vault is missing.
